Educator, Advocate, Visionary

From my upbringing in the heart of the historic Gullah Geechee corridor, where I proudly stood as the first Black American valedictorian of Georgetown High School, to the esteemed halls of the University of South Carolina, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Master of Teaching in Secondary Science Education, and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, my journey has been fueled by an unwavering passion for education and STEM. Every role I've embraced, every project I've undertaken, is a testament to my belief: education is the key to driving socioeconomic justice. This conviction is particularly pronounced in the realm of STEM literacy, a field I believe holds the promise of a brighter, more equitable future.

As the visionary behind Verbalizing Visions, LLC, I've been at the forefront of championing culturally-sustaining STEM pedagogies, with a special emphasis on uplifting the Gullah/Geechee communities. In collaboration with Colonial Life and the Center for Educational Partnerships at the University of South Carolina, I've played a pivotal role in The Education Leaders Experience (ELE). This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between early childhood to post-secondary education professionals and business leaders, fostering innovative partnerships that aim to reshape 21st-century workforce development. My academic roles, spanning institutions like Voorhees University and the University of South Carolina College of Education, have been dedicated to shaping the educators of tomorrow and redefining curriculum paradigms. This dedication is further echoed in my consultancy with SC TEACHER, where I work tirelessly to elevate South Carolina’s educator workforce.

Beyond academia, my reign as Ms. Palmetto Pride Plus America 2017 allowed me to champion STEM literacy as a cornerstone of socioeconomic justice. This platform, combined with my research interests in culturally-sustaining STEM education, holistic well-being, and community engagement, underscores my commitment to creating transformative educational experiences.

As a 2023-24 South Carolina Educational Policy Fellow, my mission has evolved yet remains rooted in the same principles. I will collaborate with a diverse tapestry of community members, advocates, and partners, all sharing a collective vision. A vision where STEM education becomes the beacon leading us to a world of sustainable energy, clean water, climate resilience, zero hunger, and holistic well-being.

For those who seek a brighter tomorrow, for organizations aiming to redefine educational landscapes, and for events that wish to inspire change - I am here to consult, to speak, and to lead. Let's embark on this transformative journey together, ensuring that every step we take resonates with inclusivity, effectiveness, and foresight!
